... and why Accessibility matters to us all. On September 28, our Ergonomen team joined the foundation Access for All for a two-hour training on the European Accessibility Act (EAA). We left not only with more knowledge, but also with a deeper sense of why digital accessibility is essential for society as a whole.
One of the first takeaways: accessibility is not only about people with permanent disabilities. It’s also about everyday situations. Poor lighting, a noisy environment, a broken arm, or even temporary fatigue – suddenly accessibility becomes relevant for each of us.
Accessibility means inclusion. It’s about fairness, but also about convenience. A clearly labeled button may be vital for a blind person, but it also saves time for a busy parent juggling kids and groceries.
The EAA requires companies to make digital products and services accessible. What stood out for us: while every EU member state applies its own rules and emphasis, the message is consistent across the board – digital offers must be usable by everyone.
Even though Switzerland isn’t part of the EU, it is aligning with these standards. Starting in 2027, with a revision of the Disability Discrimination Act, digital accessibility will become a stronger requirement here too. That means: those who prepare now will be ahead of the game later.
For us, accessibility is not a “box to tick.” It’s a mindset. It starts at the very beginning of projects – in requirements, design, writing, and testing. Because in the end, it’s not about technical checklists; it’s about people being able to participate without barriers.
And there’s another strong reason: accessibility grows the market. When digital services are inclusive, they reach more people – not only those with disabilities, but everyone who values simple, clear, and reliable solutions. In other words: accessibility is not a cost, but an investment in reach, customer satisfaction, and future growth.
The two hours with Access for All were intense, inspiring, and at times even fun – thanks to interactive quizzes and lively discussions. We learned a lot, but more importantly, we felt it: accessibility makes the digital world more human.
We’ll carry that energy into our projects. Because accessibility benefits everyone, harms no one – and makes the world a fairer place.
